Description:
Stobarts Container Park in Widnes offers logistics options via Road and rail. As part of a major refurbishment to the existing park, Stobarts contracted SJP to undertake improvements to the existing container park in addition to the replacement of the existing crane beams.
Subcontract works:
Following their award, SJP decided to subcontract all elements of the park refurbishment to TPS Civils.
The works to the new concrete yard comprised breaking out of the existing surface slab and reusing the broken-out material to regrade and reprofile levels using cut / fill techniques to negate the need for off-site disposal or importing new material. Existing drainage chambers were broken out, removed and backfilled.
A new 225mm thick C40 concrete slab, reinforced with 2 layers of A393 mesh was installed along with a new slab drainage system, connecting to an adequate positive outfall within the site provided by the Employer. The existing crane was broken up and removed from site as part of the works.
The works to the new crane rail beams comprised breaking out of 840 linear metres of existing concrete beams and depositing the arisings on site for subsequent reuse.
TPS provided a suitable temporary piling mat and installed 280nr 0.275m x 0.275m square precast concrete driven piles up to 24m in length.
Two parallel 2m wide x 0.75m thick reinforced in-situ concrete beams were installed (allowing 250kg/m3 of reinforcement) in sulphate resistant concrete upon which the crane rails were reinstalled.
Works to the new crane rail beams were undertaken in two phases during which time the crane remained operational in the alternate phase.
